EMDR Therapy in Wimbledon for those managing anxiety, traumatic events & feeling stuck.
If you’ve been feeling stuck managing anxiety, past experiences, or patterns that don’t seem to shift, EMDR therapy can help you move forward. Often, these difficulties are driven by unprocessed experiences that continue to affect how you think, feel and react, even when you’re trying to move on. I offer EMDR therapy in Wimbledon to help you process and release what’s been holding you back, so you can feel more in control and start moving forward with confidence.
How EMDR therapy works
EMDR therapy follows a structured process designed to help you feel safe, in control, and able to process difficult experiences at your own pace.
1. Preparation Phase – Building Stability and Safety
Before any historic processing begins, we focus on helping you feel grounded and in control.
This stage includes:
Understanding your current difficulties and goals
Learning techniques to manage anxiety or overwhelm
Developing a sense of safety before working on past experiences
This ensures you are not thrown into anything too quickly.
You will feel supported, prepared, and ready before moving forward.
2. Processing Phase – Reworking Distressing Memories
Once you feel ready, we begin processing specific memories or experiences that may be keeping you stuck.
Using EMDR techniques such as bilateral stimulation (eye movements or tapping), your brain is supported in:
Reprocessing distressing memories
Reducing emotional intensity
Separating the past from the present
Many clients find that memories begin to feel less overwhelming, less triggering, and more distant.
EMDR is particularly effective if you feel:
•Stuck in the past or unable to move on
•Triggered by certain memories or situations
•Overwhelmed by anxiety, panic, or intrusive thoughts
•Like you understand your problems but can’t shift them
Through EMDR, you may begin to:
•Feel calmer and more in control
•Experience fewer emotional triggers
•Gain new perspective on past events
•Move forward with newfound clarity
You remain in control throughout, and we work at a pace that feels right for you.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps you process difficult or distressing experiences.
Rather than just talking about problems, EMDR works directly with how those experiences are stored in the mind and nervous system.
This allows:
•Emotional intensity to reduce
•Negative beliefs to shift
•New, healthier perspectives to form naturally
Many clients find that things which once felt overwhelming begin to feel manageable, or no longer affect them in the same way
How Bilateral Stimulation Works
A key part of EMDR is something called bilateral stimulation. This usually involves gentle side-to-side eye movements, tapping, or alternating pulsators which can be held in your hands while you briefly focus on a memory or feeling.
It might sound unusual, but it’s simply a way of helping your brain process experiences more effectively — similar to how the brain naturally processes information during REM sleep.
Most clients find it becomes comfortable very quickly, and you remain fully aware and in control throughout.
